About the Role
JOB SUMMARY/SCOPE:
Firefighter I, Firefighter II, HazMat Awareness, HazMat Operations, EMT License prior to application.
Engages in fire suppression and fire prevention activities as a member of a fire company, to protect and safe guard lives and property.
Performs rescue and First Responder medical assistance on a regular basis.
Assists in the maintenance and repair of fire station and equipment. No supervisory or budgetary responsibilities
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
PERFORMS first aid, CPR, automatic defibrillation, and medical assistance tasks as required.
PERFORMS all phases of fire suppression duties, including laying hose lines, operating nozzles and master stream devices, raising and climbing ladders, ventilation work, and salvage and overhaul operations.
PERFORMS extrication and rescue operations to remove trapped victims from hazardous or life threatening situations.
PARTICIPATES in numerous types of training activities covering all phases of Department operations.
DRIVES fire apparatus, operates pump and aerial devices under both emergency and non-emergency conditions.
PERFORMS first responder duties for hazardous material calls.
CLEANS and PERFORMS routine maintenance on fire station, apparatus, equipment, and tools.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
PARTICIPATES in public fire safety education and public relations programs including tours at school and in station.
PEFORMS truck checks on all first due apparatus at the beginning of the shift and completes all documentation of each truck check.
CLEANS station including emptying all trash cans, mop, and clean restrooms.
WASH any apparatus that appears to be dirty and clean bay floors if needed.
COMPLETE other non-routine tasks assigned by an officer as needed.
ATTEND at least 9 hours of training every quarter with Plattsburg Fire personnel.
PERFORMS all other related duties as assigned.

Requirements
Required (Essential) Knowledge. Skills and Abilities
Must have Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Hazardous Materials Awareness, Hazardous Materials Operations, and EMT license prior to application.
Skills in performing mechanical and physical tasks.
Ability to assume leadership duties during periods when an officer is not present.
Knowledge of fire behavior; hydraulic principles; fire suppression tactics; and department rules, policies and procedures.
Knowledge of District geography, principles of building construction, and basic first aid and life support.
Knowledge of reporting and record keeping systems.
Knowledge of hazardous materials.
Ability to operate heavy duty fire apparatus under emergency conditions.
Ability to react quickly and effectively, and to cope with stressful situations and function effectively in fire ground activities.
Skills in interpersonal communications. Must be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions, establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Valid Driver’s License required.
Must maintain EMT license as a condition of employment.
EDUCATION:
High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate’s degree in Fire Science preferred.
Passing of a drug screening and Physical Capabilities Profile required prior to appointment.
